Shop the "natural GLP-1" aisle for five minutes and two names keep surfacing: Pendulum, which sells capsules built around a live gut bacterium, and Supergut, which sells a fiber powder you stir into a drink. They share three characters on the label — G, L, P — and almost nothing else. Most shoppers arrive treating them as two versions of the same product and asking which version is better. That is the wrong question, and answering it honestly means starting with what is actually inside each one.

Here is the short version, stated plainly so no one can miss it: these are different categories of product, and their GLP-1 claims fail in different ways. Pendulum is a live multi-strain probiotic whose headline organism is Akkermansia muciniphila; its GLP-1 mechanism was demonstrated in mice and cells, and GLP-1 was never directly measured in humans taking the product. They are not two versions of one thing

Its products are multi-strain probiotic capsules, and the headline ingredient is Akkermansia muciniphila, a mucin-degrading gut bacterium that is consistently more abundant in leaner, metabolically healthier people. Pendulum was among the first companies to commercialize a live human-origin Akkermansia strain for consumer use, and its GLP-1 SKU pairs Akkermansia with Clostridium butyricum and Bifidobacterium infantis. Supergut sells substrate. Its powder — roughly 7g of fiber per serving — is built on resistant starch (from sources like green banana or maize starch) and beta-glucan, the soluble fiber concentrated in oats and barley, alongside other prebiotic fibers. These are legitimate, well-characterized dietary fibers, not exotic compounds and not hormones. There are no live strains in the packet at all. That distinction is not a technicality, because it changes what can go wrong. With Pendulum you are trying to introduce a living organism, so strain identity and viability are the whole ballgame — which is why it is worth buying the actual studied formulation rather than a cheaper "Akkermansia" knockoff with no human data of its own. With Supergut you are feeding bacteria you already have, so the variables are dose and tolerance: fermentable fiber can cause bloating or gas, especially while you ramp up. The GLP-1 claim, side by side

Both brands point at the same hormone, and they get there by completely different routes.

Pendulum's route runs through mice. The foundational work showed that giving Akkermansia muciniphila to mice reversed much of diet-induced obesity, restoring the gut mucus barrier and improving insulin resistance1. A later landmark study found that pasteurized Akkermansia — and a specific membrane protein from it, Amuc_1100 — improved metabolism in obese and diabetic mice2. Then came the finding that earned the "GLP-1" label: researchers identified a secreted Akkermansia protein, P9, that directly stimulated GLP-1 secretion in mice3. That is a carefully built mechanistic story. It is also mouse and molecular biology, and GLP-1 itself has never been directly measured in humans taking the Pendulum product.

Supergut's route runs through your colon, and it has been measured in people. When soluble and resistant fibers reach the colon, gut bacteria ferment them into short-chain fatty acids that bind receptors on intestinal L-cells and prompt them to release more of your own GLP-1 and PYY7. That pathway is real and human. The catch is size: when researchers delivered a large, targeted dose of propionate straight to the human colon to maximize exactly this pathway, they did raise GLP-1 and PYY and modestly reduced intake, but the body-weight payoff was small8.

So the two GLP-1 stories fail in mirror-image ways. Pendulum's is the better biology and the weaker human evidence — a clean mechanism nobody has confirmed in a person taking the capsule. Supergut's is the plainer biology and the better-measured one — and what the measurements show is a modest nudge, not a drug.

What each has actually shown in humans

Pendulum's human file has two entries. The first is a 32-person, three-month, proof-of-concept randomized trial in overweight and obese volunteers: supplementing pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila was safe and well tolerated and improved insulin sensitivity and some metabolic markers versus placebo4. It did not demonstrate meaningful weight loss and did not report a measured GLP-1 increase as the driver. The second, and the strongest human data tied to Pendulum's actual formulation, is a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of the WBF-011 strain blend in people with type 2 diabetes already on metformin: over 12 weeks it improved post-meal glucose control and lowered A1c versus placebo5. Read that endpoint carefully, because it is the single most important fact in this comparison — it is a blood-sugar result in people with diabetes, not a weight-loss result. Broader context is consistent with that modest role: probiotic supplementation shows small, mixed glycemic benefits in type 2 diabetes6.

Supergut's human file belongs to its ingredients, not its product. In a randomized crossover study in people with metabolic syndrome, a beta-glucan bread meal lowered the post-meal glucose response and increased satiety versus refined wheat — but produced no significant difference in how much people actually ate afterward9. In a randomized crossover trial in people with type 2 diabetes, resistant starch reduced hunger and increased satiety ratings10. And the most honest single data point in the whole fiber literature: a randomized study of resistant-starch wheat increased PYY yet had no effect on self-reported satiety11. You can measure the gut-hormone response Supergut is selling and still see nothing happen to how full people feel. On the scale, a systematic review and meta-analysis of prolonged isolated soluble-fiber supplementation in people with overweight or obesity found a real but modest effect — a couple of pounds beyond diet12.

Note what neither column contains: a randomized weight-loss trial of the finished product. "The ingredients have studies" is not the same as "this product has a study," and that sentence applies to both brands equally.

Neither brand publishes a simple, transparent per-unit price, which is itself a finding. We are not going to pretend those ranges agree. They move with pack size, retailer and subscription status, and the practical instruction is the same for both: price-check the exact SKU on the day you buy, because neither brand makes that easy for you.

What the price buys is different in kind, too. With Pendulum the premium is for a specific, hard-to-manufacture live strain with the most interesting science on this shelf. That is the narrow, defensible case, and it is a real one — Akkermansia is one of the more scientifically interesting strains in this entire aisle. Treat any movement on the scale as a pleasant surprise, not the plan.

Pick Supergut if your actual problem is that you do not eat enough fiber and a flavored powder is what will finally fix that. The glucose-smoothing and fullness benefits are genuine, the formulation is sensible, and there is nothing fraudulent about selling fiber. Just buy it as fiber, not as a hormone product — and if your goal is "more fiber, less money," plain grocery-store fiber does the same job.

Pick neither if you want drug-like weight loss. This is the answer a lot of people arrive needing, so we will state it without hedging. A GLP-1 receptor agonist floods the receptor at supraphysiologic levels, which is why the pivotal STEP 1 trial of semaglutide produced about 15% mean body-weight loss over 68 weeks13 and the SURMOUNT-1 trial of tirzepatide produced roughly 20%14. A live probiotic strain with a mouse-stage GLP-1 mechanism and a fiber blend with a small measured one are not in that conversation, and no honest reading of the data puts them there. One more thing worth saying because the "versus" framing hides it: these two are not rivals for the same slot. A probiotic capsule and a fiber powder do not compete with each other any more than yogurt competes with oatmeal. If both fit your budget and your goals, nothing in either product's evidence argues against using both — and nothing in either product's evidence promises that doing so will move the scale.
